RSPO At Palmex 2025: Driving Digital Transformation For A Sustainable Palm Oil Industry Theme: “Beyond Traceability: Tech Strategies For A Sustainable Palm Oil Industry”

Charting the Course for Sustainable Palm Oil

As palm oil continues to face global scrutiny from both environmental and ethical perspectives, it’s clear that sustainable palm oil is no longer a choose-but rather a must. To keep pace with rapid change, traceability is just the first step: within the palm oil sector, the time is now to advance to broader and tech-enabled systems that create measurable and scalable impact.

During Palmex Indonesia 2025, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) will host a seminal talkshow called “Beyond Traceability: Tech Strategies for a Sustainable Palm Oil Industry.” This interactive session will describe how emerging digital technologies are disrupting existing sustainability practices throughout the palm oil value chain, from plantation to plate.

In addition to compliance, market access, and stakeholder expectations will shift for all sectors in light of global environmental policy shifts (e.g., EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)) and increases in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards. For the palm oil sector, sustainable palm oil cannot be a value-add, but must instead be the minimum.

But real sustainability goes further. It demands systemic transformation driven by data, integration, and innovation. The industry must transition from basic traceability systems to digital ecosystems that provide real-time visibility, credible compliance, and inclusive benefits, especially for smallholder farmers.

What is “Beyond Traceability”?

While traceability allows monitoring of product journey from plantation to product, it does not change other serious problems like:

Verification of land legality and preventing deforestation.

Support smallholder inclusion for sustainability programs.

Transparent auditable data for ESG reporting.

Break data silos for integrated decision-making.

So, “Beyond Traceability” means using digital tools like geospatial monitoring, remote sensing, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and mobile data collection to create a stronger, transparent, and equitable palm oil industry.

RSPO’s Digital Leadership

As a multi-stakeholder platform promoting sustainability, RSPO has played a role in the industry’s movement toward technological digital transformation. In accordance with the Principles & Criteria, RSPO works with its members to apply technology solutions that will improve transparency, ensure regulatory compliance, and build consumer and investor trust.

From satellite-based deforestation alerts to digital farmer traceability platforms, RSPO members are pioneering tools that make sustainability not only visible—but verifiable and scalable.
