Sustainability In The Spotlight: Orange Sustainable Living Week 2025

Orange is once again set to shine a light on environmental responsibility with Orange Sustainable Living Week, running from September 21 to 28. This annual event encourages residents and businesses across the region to embrace practical ways of reducing waste, saving energy, and creating more eco-friendly lifestyles at home and at work.

Now in its 17th year, the program—organised by the Rotary Club of Orange and proudly supported by Orange City Council—has grown into a much-anticipated community tradition. The highlight of the week, the Orange Sustainable Living Expo, will take place on Sunday, September 21, from 9am to 2pm at the Naylor Pavilion, Orange Showground.

A Community Celebration of Sustainability

The expo will feature around 20 exhibitors and organisations who are passionate about providing practical solutions for everyday living. From energy-saving home upgrades to smarter water management, the event is designed to empower people to take small steps that collectively create a big impact.

Cr David Mallard, Chair of Orange City Council’s Environmental Sustainability Committee, described the expo as “a fantastic opportunity to connect with experts and discover sustainable options that not only protect the planet but also save households money in the long run.”

“It’s about showing people that sustainability isn’t just about sacrifice—it’s about making smarter choices that benefit your health, your wallet, and your community,” he said. “Visitors will walk away with ideas they can implement straight away.”

What to Expect at the Expo

The 2025 Orange Sustainable Living Expo promises a hands-on and interactive experience. Some of the highlights include:

  • Energy-efficient homes and appliances – Discover ways to save on energy bills through better designed homes, insulation and appliances.
  • Rooftop solar, batteries, and electrification – Find out how to use renewable energy from your home, and discover more about storage and electrification.
  • Smarter water use – Exhibitors will share options for saving water with rainwater harvesting, irrigation options and other drought resiliency options.
  • Waste-free living – Composting, recycling hacks, and strategies for reducing plastic waste will be demonstrated.
  • Electric vehicles and bikes – Test rides, charging information, and conversations with current EV owners will help visitors understand the transition to cleaner transport.
  • Biodiversity and climate action – Discover how you can play a role in protecting local species and reducing your carbon footprint.

Alongside information stalls, the event will also feature family-friendly attractions. Visitors can ride in an electric vehicle, receive a free kitchen caddy for food waste collection from the NetWaste stall, and meet some of Australia’s remarkable native animals up close.

The expo is free to visit so everyone can attend! Residents are encouraged to bring family, friends, and neighbours for a day full of ideas, innovation, and inspiration.

After the Expo: Activities throughout the week

The expo is the key highlight of Sustainable Living week with the rest of the program running over a number of days with a range of activities:

  • Resource Recovery Centre Tour – Friday 26 September (9am – 11am). Find out what happens to the waste you throw away and see how our local recycling is managed!
  • Home Energy Efficiency Workshop – Saturday, September 27 (2pm – 3pm). A practical session focused on lowering energy use in the home through insulation, appliances, and everyday behavioural changes.
  • Waratah Wetlands Native Vegetation Planting – Sunday, September 28 (10am – 2pm). A hands-on opportunity for community members to help restore local ecosystems by planting native species.

These activities are designed to extend learning, encourage community participation, and build momentum toward creating a more sustainable Central West.

Building a Greener Future Together

Orange Sustainable Living Week is more than a collection of events, it is a challenge to every individual and business to think differently about their consumption, conservation and contribution to a healthier planet. Residents of Orange have an opportunity to show the rest of the regional communities in Australia how to live sustainably, and that it is possible, and worthwhile.

So save the date for September 21–28, 2025. For anyone interested in solar power, wanting to try an electric car, or looking for simple ways to reduce waste at home, the week will have something for everyone.
